William Carey is considered the Father of Protestant Missions and the first era of modern missions dates back to the publishing of his great work in 1792 “An Enquiry into the Obligation of the Christians to Use Means for the Conversion of the Heathens.” This missions manifesto is still regarded as the first and still the greatest missionary treatise in the English language.
Carey is also oft-quoted as saying “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.” I was reflecting on that great idea today.
What does it mean for all of us to attempt great things for God while expecting great things for God? We have not yet tasted this greatness in our lives. Yet we are starting to push off from the dock into unchartered territory. We are eager to simplify our life, sell everything we own, and leave on that boat that will send us overseas on this missions voyage.
Already our friends and family are beginning to send us off. We are looking ahead from the stem toward the work that awaits us with great anticipation, praying for wind to fill these sails and speed us on our way. Our hearts are eager to be about the father's business. We have charted a path, but He is laying the course.
We are also gazing back from the stern at our friends on the pier. Your steady and faithful supply of financial means and heavenly prayers will keep us and enable us to continue this journey. You inspire us to keep going. Our hearts are heavy waving to those we love, yet we are cheered by your enthusiasm.
Gratefully, we are able to report that we have received our first donation this past Sunday as well as a few more commitments of tangible and substantial pledges. We feel our boat is finally casting off moorings. We are humbled and full of anticipation.
What great things can we expect from God on this journey? We can't wait to find out and share them with you. Thank you for being a part of this trip with us. Our God is an awesome God and His plans are perfect.
Steady as she goes. Full and by. We are underway!
